NYTimes: Megachurches building more than churches, Book: Christianity's Dangerous Idea
- The New York Times ran an article last week on megachurches expanded their ministries to include the financing and development of different kinds of business interests, from aviation to investment partnerships. The article cites a church called ChangePoint ministry in Anchorage who have built a cold storage facility and a sports canvas dome tent. The article goes on to express concerns from folks of other faiths feeling uneasy using the product or results of these ventures and also calls into question tax exempt status when the efforts begin to generate profits. Is your local church active in an area that has traditionally not been a part of the church and is now generating profits? Leave your comments.
- I've just started reading a book recommended by Michael Spencer over at the Internet Monk titled, "Christianity's Dangerous Idea : the Protestant revolution-- a history from the sixteenth century to the twenty-first" by Alister E. McGrath. The "dangerous idea" lying at the heart of Protestantism is that the interpretation of the Bible is each individual's right and responsibility as opposed to that of a central point or denomination - more plainly, that individual believers could and should read the Bible for themselves and calls as an example, the geographical Pentecostal southern hemisphere. Anyways, I'll know more once I've started reading, the book is on my night stand ready and waiting for me.
