The Godly Seed In The Life
Of Enoch
“Jared lived one hundred and
sixty-two years, and
begot Enoch. After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight
hundred years, and had sons and daughters. So all
the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two
years; and he died. Enoch lived sixty-five years, and
begot Methuselah. After he begot Methuselah, Enoch
walked with God three hundred years, and had sons
and daughters. So all the days of Enoch were three
hundred and sixty-five years. And Enoch walked with
God; and he was not, for God took him.”
- Genesis 5:18-24
Enoch’s Life Was An Example Of
Three Things:
- He totally dedicated his life
to God
- He began a deeper kind of walk
and life with God
- He taught men the life and walk
of total commitment
to God, of unbroken communion and fellowship
with God

Genesis : Translation and Commentary
by Robert Alter
The Biblical
book of Genesis contains some of the most sublime poetry known to man
as well as the powerful and bloody history of early Israel. Literary
critic Robert Alter here joins the ranks of contemporary authors who
have tried to mimic, in English, the sonorous rhythms and parallel
constructions of the original Hebrew. He also supplies an insightful,
fascinating commentary that emphasizes the dramatic unity of the
Genesis story. For believers seeking a deeper understanding of the
Bible's first book, or for readers interested in the Bible as
literature, Alter's contribution is essential.
The New
York Times Book Review, Phyllis Trible:
"Robert Alter['s] ... studies of biblical narrative and poetry have
become classics ... translators and scholars receive the censure of Mr.
Alter ... he finds a powerful coherence in the Genesis that has come
down to us."

Continued from above
The account of Enoch in Genesis
gives us an outline
of his life, we will consider two of them today:
I. Enoch walked with God
II. Enoch was translated, taken into God’s presence
without dying
Scripture declares twice that
“Enoch walked with God”.
Walking means forward movement, steady progress.
Enoch did not walk a little, then stop and turn from
the Lord; he did not fluctuate up and down. Enoch
was genuine, he was steadfast and persevering. He
walked with God constantly growing and growing.
What Does It Mean to Walk With
God?
I. First, to walk with God requires a conversion experience.
As such, Enoch was convicted to do several things:
- Of his sinful and ungodly life.
- Of his duty to provide a godly
home for his son and
any other children who might come.
- To lead his son to trust and
follow God and to believe
God’s Word and promise of the Savior into this world
Secondly, to walk with God means
to believe God and
to be diligent in seeking after God’s promises.
“By faith Enoch was taken
away so that he did not see
death, “and was not found, because God had taken
him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony,
that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to
please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that
He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently
seek Him.” - Hebrews 11:5,6
Enoch believed that God is the
only true God and creator
of the universe. He believed that God will reward those
who diligently seek Him.
Thirdly, to walk with God means to
develop an unbroken
communion and fellowship with God.
Enoch sought to keep his mind and
thoughts upon God
and upon the things that are true and profitable (read
Philippians 4:8). Enoch sought to cast down every imagination
and to captivate every thought for God (see 2nd
Corinthians 10:5). Enoch sought to pray always, to walk
and live in a Spirit of Prayer all the day long (read 1st
Thessalonians 5:17).
Fourth, walking with god means to
live a holy and godly
life.
A life of separation, withdrawing
from the world, a life of
self control (Romans 12:1, 1 Thessalonians 4:7).
Enoch was strong in his holiness
standards. While everyone
of that time were taking care of the pleasures of the
flesh, Enoch meditated on the Lord and kept his godly
values. His relationship with the Lord was more important
that the duties of this world.
Fifth, to walk with God means to
bear a strong witness
and testimony for God.
The time Enoch lived in known as
the Antediluvian (before
the Flood Age). This was an ungodly age full of:
lying, stealing, killing, murder, lawlessness, alcohol, immorality,
greed, assaults, injury, anger, hatred,
demonism, witchcraft, materialism, secularism, denial
or questioning of God. It sounds like today!
II. Enoch Was Translated Into
God’s Presence
“He was not” or “He was no more” or “He was seen no
more”: Enoch was translated or transferred from earth
to Heaven, to be with God (Hebrews 11:5).
Why Did God Translate Him Over?
- Enoch walked so closely to God:
a life of complete
self discipline
- God translated him to
demonstrate and symbolize
His power
- He was translated to show that
there is eternal life
with God
- Enoch was translated for our
encouragement
“Therefore, my beloved
brethren, be steadfast, immovable,
always abounding in the work of the Lord,
knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
- 1st Corinthians 15:58
Conclusion
A door is left open for a return to the Tree of Life.
Enoch found that door by walking with God. It is a
way of life, not just a keeping of “a set of laws”. Enoch
had only one objective; how simple our lives can become
if we have only one objective to seek, one purpose
to fulfill. I encourage you, walk with and please God!
