The Triumphant Entry Into Jerusalem... Riding A Colt

During Christ' last week leading to the Cross on Calvary, 48 events are recorded in Scripture. Of those 48, the first event to occur was Christ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the Holy city. There were millions of people gathered, Jews, Greeks and Romans. As the mobs filled the famous tourist trap there was a Prophecy in the horizon ready to be fulfilled.

"Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass."
- Zechariah 9:9

This was no ordinary day despite the coming of the passover week Jesus was to announce the ultimate challenge, the Son of man was to proclaim that He is the true messiah, the king coming to conquer.

Just before entering Jerusalem, Jesus and the true disciples were on the outskirts at Bethphage and Bethany near the Mount of Olives. Jesus had said to the disciples, "go ahead of me and you will find a donkey and a colt tied up which no one has ever ridden". Jesus displayed His omniscience knowing all things, surely He was not just a man but He was God manifested in the flesh. This commandment might be insignificant to us but there's a great lesson we can learn from obeying the Lord. First of all, Christ did not own a colt, or for that matter any material possessions of this world. He had to borrow the colt to proclaim His entrance.

Sometime we are ministering and we do not have the right materials and we become defeated thinking it can't be done, but if we depend on the Lord to provide for us we will fulfill the will of God. This is also a comfort for us to know that when God wants us to do something He always sends two or more to do the job, we are not to be independent in our service but depend on other brethren and sisters. Two by two the animal went into Noah's ark and two by two Jesus sent the disciples on there mission. We are never to be alone in our service for God.

So the disciple went into the village and immediately they found a donkey and a colt tied to the door way bringing them to Jesus. What's so important about using a colt, why not any other animal? In the Old Testament a colt was a noble animal, it was used for service and to carry the burdens of men; perhaps more importantly, it was used by Kings. When they entered a city in peace, they rode a colt to symbolize their peaceful intentions. When a King entered a city as a conqueror, he rode a stallion. The colt also represented sacredness, according to the laws of purification given by Moses the animal had to be perfect and unused, never having a yoke upon his neck.

Jesus was making sure everything He did was representing Him as a king, in the form of a challenge. The Lord needed the colt, just as the Lord needs us. Some of us have been tied up we, have never been loosed to do the work of the Lord but now Jesus is saying loosen that colt or loosen our ministry because God needs you! It's crucial for us to understand that God needs our worship and our service. What's your meaning in life? To be used in the ministry of the Lord. God needs you!

Jesus was now strongly proclaiming to be a king, better yet the true Messiah. Before Christ would not except praise but now Christ said, "I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out". - Luke 19:40. The Pharisees were extremely mad, even at each other. "The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him". - John 12:19. They were jealous, their reign or authority would come to an end if this was the true Messiah. They would be just like the common people with no special privileges. All around Jesus you heard different proclamations, some were:
"Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest" and, :Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest and Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest". The multitudes received Him as King, they paid homage and reverence to the coming King. In the eyes of the screaming worshipers they thought there King was coming to start to conquer the roman empire.

Little did they know He did not come on a white stallion but on a humble colt coming with peace, not to destroy the governments but to save men. Their actions soon changed and instead of praising Hosanna in the highest they later on proclaimed that He would be crucified. Today people want power and authority, seldom do you find people that are humble and full of peace. The triumphant entry of Jesus was just the very beginning of His last ministry in Jerusalem during the Holy week. Let us learn from this day and remember that today, Jesus our true Messiah entered Jerusalem to save all men. Amen!

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." - John 3:16

"And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there." - Matthew 21:17
