Acts 1 introduces the Book of Acts, focusing on the nascent days of the Christian church. Penned by Luke, it recounts Jesus’ final interactions with His apostles before His ascension. Following His resurrection, Jesus appeared over 40 days, providing many proofs of His life and speaking about the Kingdom of God. He instructed His apostles to remain in Jerusalem for the promised Holy Spirit. Prior to His ascension, Jesus imparted a pivotal mission: they would receive power from the Holy Spirit and be His witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).
Witnessing His ascension, the apostles were reassured by two angels of Jesus' eventual return in the same manner. Returning to Jerusalem, the apostles, along with other believers, dedicated themselves to prayer in an upper room. Recognizing the need to replace Judas Iscariot, Peter led the group, guided by Scripture, to choose Matthias as the new apostle through prayer and casting lots, maintaining the continuity of the Twelve.
This chapter underscores the importance of waiting on God’s timing, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the unity in prayer as foundational to the early church’s mission and growth.
