In the book of Numbers, Chapter 22, verses 28-31, an extraordinary event unfolds. Balaam, a prophet, is on his way to meet Balak, the king of Moab. Despite warnings from God, Balaam persists on his journey. As Balaam rides his donkey, an angel of the Lord blocks their path. However, only the donkey can see the angel, armed with a sword. Startled, the donkey veers off the road, presses Balaam’s foot against a wall, and finally lies down. Frustrated, Balaam beats the donkey.
Then, a miraculous event occurs: the Lord opens the donkey’s mouth, and it speaks to Balaam, questioning his harsh treatment. “What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?” the donkey asks. Balaam, astonished, converses with the donkey, not realizing the divine intervention. Suddenly, the Lord reveals the angel to Balaam. Terrified, Balaam falls facedown. The angel reprimands him for his reckless path and explains that the donkey saved his life.
This moment underscores the importance of heeding divine guidance and recognizing that wisdom can come from unexpected sources. Balaam’s experience reminds us to remain open to signs and messages, however unusual they may appear.
