Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, today we reflect on the profound words of our Lord Jesus Christ, spoken in His Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 5:11 reminds us that we are blessed when we face revilement, persecution, and false accusations for His sake.
Persecution is not a new phenomenon for those who follow Christ. Throughout history, believers have faced opposition, ridicule, and even martyrdom for their faith. Jesus forewarns us of this reality, assuring us that when we suffer for His name, we are indeed blessed. Jesus specifically mentions being reviled and falsely accused. Revilement is verbal abuse—harsh and insulting language aimed at us because of our faith. False accusations are lies and slander spread to tarnish our reputation. These attacks can be deeply painful and disheartening. Yet, Jesus calls us blessed in these moments. Why? Because we are sharing in His sufferings.
1 Peter 4:14 tells us, "If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you." When we are persecuted for Christ’s sake, we are in good company. We join the ranks of prophets, apostles, and countless faithful who have gone before us. More importantly, we align ourselves with Jesus Himself, who endured the ultimate persecution for our salvation. Jesus teaches us to love our enemies, to pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). Our response should reflect the grace and love of Christ. By doing so, we become witnesses of His love and truth.
