Why would the Bible say that sorrow can be better than laughter?

In Ecclesiastes chapter 7, the Teacher—traditionally understood to be King Solomon—presents a series of powerful paradoxes that challenge how we normally think about life, success, and happiness.

The chapter begins with a striking statement: “A good name is better than precious ointment.” In other words, character and reputation are more valuable than wealth or luxury. From there, the wisdom becomes even more surprising. Solomon teaches that mourning can be better than feasting and that sorrow can refine the heart more than laughter.

Why? Because hardship often teaches lessons that comfort never can.

Ecclesiastes 7 explores many themes that still resonate today:

• Why adversity can lead to wisdom

• The danger of longing for “the good old days”

• The importance of patience over anger

• Why no one is perfectly righteous

• The limits of human wisdom

The chapter ultimately reminds us that life is complex and sometimes mysterious. Both prosperity and adversity exist under the sovereignty of God, and our role is to live with humility, wisdom, and reverence.

In this video, we break down the powerful lessons of Ecclesiastes 7 and discover how its ancient wisdom can guide us today.
