In the midst of a severe drought, the prophet Elijah was led by God to the town of Zarephath. There, he encountered a widow gathering sticks. Elijah asked her for a little water and a piece of bread. The widow, overwhelmed by her dire situation, explained she had only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. She was preparing a final meal for herself and her son before they succumbed to starvation.

Despite her desperate circumstances, Elijah assured her, saying, “Do not fear. Go and do as you have said. But first make me a small loaf of bread and bring it to me. Then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”

Trusting Elijah’s words, the widow did as instructed. Miraculously, the flour and oil did not run out, providing sustenance for Elijah, the widow, and her household for many days. This story from I Kings 17:10-16 exemplifies unwavering faith and God’s provision, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, divine help can arrive in unexpected ways.

Scripture:

1 Kings 17:10-16 (KJV)

So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.
