Genesis 16 tells a deeply emotional and complex story of faith, impatience, and redemption. Despite God’s promise to make Abram the father of many nations, Sarai remained childless for years. Desperate to fulfill the promise in her own way, she gave her servant Hagar to Abram as a surrogate—an act common in ancient culture but heavy with spiritual consequence.
When Hagar becomes pregnant, tension erupts. Hagar looks down on Sarai, Sarai blames Abram, and Hagar eventually flees into the wilderness. But there, in her lowest moment, the Angel of the Lord finds her, comforts her, and promises that her son Ishmael will also become a great nation.
This chapter reminds us that human solutions cannot replace divine timing, and yet, God’s mercy reaches even those caught in the middle. Sarai’s plan altered relationships and futures, but God remained faithful to all involved—especially the unseen and unheard.
