Gospel of Matthew Chapter 27 – The Price of Redemption

Matthew 27 is one of the most sobering and sacred chapters in all of Scripture. It walks us step by step through the arrest, trial, crucifixion, and burial of Jesus Christ—the moment where heaven’s love collided with humanity’s sin.

This chapter begins with Judas Iscariot, crushed by guilt, returning the thirty pieces of silver and ending his own life—a tragic warning about remorse without repentance. Jesus stands silent before Pilate, declared innocent yet condemned anyway. Barabbas, a guilty man, is released while the innocent Son of God is sentenced to die.

Mocked, beaten, crowned with thorns, and nailed to a cross at Golgotha, Jesus fulfills prophecy in agony. Darkness falls over the land. Then comes the cry that echoes through eternity:

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46, KJV)

At His death, the veil of the temple is torn from top to bottom—God Himself opening the way back to Him. The earth shakes. Graves open. A Roman centurion declares, “Truly this was the Son of God.”

Jesus is laid in a sealed tomb, guarded by soldiers—yet even sealed stone cannot stop what God has ordained.

This chapter teaches us:

The devastating cost of sin

The injustice Christ willingly endured

The depth of God’s love

The victory that was already unfolding
