Jeremiah 17 hits us with one of the most powerful contrasts in all of Scripture: the curse of trusting in man vs. the blessing of trusting in the Lord. The chapter opens with a striking image—Judah’s sin engraved with an iron pen on their hearts—showing how deeply rebellion had taken root. God warns that those who depend on human strength, wealth, or self-reliance will live spiritually dry, like a lonely shrub in a desert.
But those who place their confidence in the Lord?
They’re like a tree planted by the waters, spreading roots, flourishing even in drought, unshaken by adversity (Jeremiah 17:7–8 KJV).
Jeremiah reminds us that the human heart is “deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jer. 17:9 KJV). God alone sees through us fully, searching hearts and testing motives. That’s why trusting Him—not ourselves—is the only secure foundation.
The chapter closes with a call to honor the Sabbath: obey God, receive blessing; ignore His ways, reap destruction.
Jeremiah 17 challenges us: Where is your trust planted? In the desert… or by the river?
