What does unwavering obedience look like?
In Jeremiah 35, God sets a living illustration inside the very courts of the temple. He tells Jeremiah to bring the Rechabites—a nomadic clan known for discipline and tradition—and offer them wine.
They refuse.
Not because wine was sinful—but because their forefather, Jonadab, commanded them never to drink it. For generations they had obeyed. No vineyards. No houses. No settling down. They lived in tents, honoring a promise made long before they were born.
God then turns to Judah with a piercing rebuke.
The Rechabites obeyed the voice of a man long dead.
Judah refused to obey the living God—again and again.
And God rewards faithfulness.
“Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.”
—Jeremiah 35:19 (KJV)
This chapter delivers a timeless truth: God values consistency, loyalty, and obedience—especially when it’s costly and countercultural.
Jeremiah 35 challenges us to ask:
Are we passing down compromise… or conviction?
