Jeremiah 36 The King Who Burned God’s Word — And Lost Everything

What happens when a king tries to destroy the Word of God?

In Jeremiah 36, the Lord commands Jeremiah to write down every prophecy spoken from the beginning. Jeremiah dictates the words to his faithful scribe, Baruch, who boldly reads the scroll aloud in the temple courts.

The message spreads—from the people… to palace officials… to the throne itself.

When King Jehoiakim hears the words of the Lord, he doesn’t repent.

He reaches for a knife.

As the scroll is read, the king cuts it piece by piece and throws it into the fire, rejecting God’s warning and silencing the prophet—or so he thinks.

But God’s Word cannot be burned.

The Lord commands Jeremiah to write the scroll again—with added judgment. The message is stronger. The warning is sharper. The consequences are sealed.

“Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah… Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words…”

—Jeremiah 36:27–28 (KJV)

Jeremiah 36 confronts every generation with a serious question:

When God speaks truth we don’t like—do we humble ourselves, or do we try to destroy the message?

God’s Word endures. Kings fall. Truth remains.
