Jeremiah 38 Thrown Into the Pit for Telling the Truth

Jeremiah 38 reveals the high cost of speaking God’s truth in a time of national crisis. As Babylon’s army closes in on Jerusalem, the prophet Jeremiah delivers an unpopular message from the LORD: surrender, and live.

The people don’t want truth — they want encouragement. Powerful officials accuse Jeremiah of weakening the soldiers and convincing the king to silence him. With King Zedekiah’s reluctant consent, they lower Jeremiah into a muddy cistern, abandoning him to die in darkness.

But God is not finished.

An unlikely hero emerges — Ebed-Melek, an Ethiopian servant of the king. Risking his own position, he boldly pleads for Jeremiah’s life. Through compassion, courage, and obedience, God rescues His prophet from the pit.

Yet even after witnessing this miracle, King Zedekiah remains trapped by fear. He secretly seeks God’s counsel but refuses to obey, fearing the opinions of men more than the command of God.

Jeremiah 38 teaches us:

Truth is often resisted before it is honored

God may use unexpected people to deliver us

Fear of man leads to spiritual destruction

Faithfulness shines brightest in the darkest pits

“Thus saith the LORD… He that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live.” (Jeremiah 38:17, KJV)

If you’ve ever felt thrown aside for obeying God, this message is for you.
