Have you ever wondered what it really means to be a hero?
In the midst of Jerusalem’s collapse, as Babylon’s armies overran the city and fear ruled the streets, one man quietly chose courage. Ebed-Melech, an Ethiopian official in King Zedekiah’s court, saw injustice—and refused to ignore it.
The prophet Jeremiah had been thrown into a muddy cistern, left to die for speaking God’s truth. Powerful leaders turned away. The crowds stayed silent. But Ebed-Melech stepped forward.
Risking his position and possibly his life, he approached the king and pleaded for Jeremiah’s rescue. With wisdom and compassion, he gathered rags and ropes and carefully lifted God’s prophet from the mire.
Ebed-Melech didn’t seek recognition. He didn’t gain power.
He simply did what was right.
This powerful story teaches us:
True heroism is often quiet and unseen
Courage belongs to those who act, not just speak
God values compassion and justice in dark times
Anyone can be used by God, regardless of status
“For thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the LORD.” (Jeremiah 39:18, KJV)
