In the tranquil yet somber setting of the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus faces a moment of overwhelming anguish before His impending arrest. According to Matthew 26:36-46 (KJV), Jesus, accompanied by His disciples, enters the garden and asks them to sit while He goes further to pray. He takes Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with Him, expressing that His soul is "exceeding sorrowful, even unto death." He asks them to stay and watch with Him.
As He moves a little farther, He falls on His face and prays, "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." Returning to His disciples, He finds them asleep and addresses Peter, asking, "What, could ye not watch with me one hour?" He urges them to watch and pray to avoid temptation, acknowledging that "the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
A second time, Jesus prays, "O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done." Again finding His disciples asleep, He leaves them and prays a third time, repeating His plea. Upon His final return, He tells them, "Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners."
This poignant scene highlights Jesus' profound humanity and divine submission to God's will.
