In Matthew 21, Jesus does something shocking.
He’s hungry.
He sees a fig tree full of leaves.
It looks healthy. Promising. Alive.
But when He gets close… there is no fruit.
So He says:
“Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever.” — Matthew 21:19 (KJV)
And instantly, the tree withers.
At first glance, it feels harsh.
But this wasn’t about hunger.
It was about hypocrisy.
The fig tree was a symbol — full of appearance, empty of substance.
It represents lives that look spiritual…
Religious activity without repentance.
Leaves without fruit.
Performance without transformation.
In the same chapter, Jesus cleanses the temple and confronts religious leaders who honored God with words — but not with obedience.
God is not impressed by leaves.
He looks for fruit.
Fruit of repentance.
Fruit of love.
Fruit of obedience.
Fruit of integrity.
The withered fig tree is a warning:
A faith that only performs will eventually be exposed.
But it’s also an invitation — to cultivate a faith that is alive, rooted, and productive.
The question Matthew 21 asks is simple:
Are we bearing fruit… or just growing leaves?
🔥 Watch. Reflect. Examine your heart.
