Matthew 22 opens with a royal invitation.
A king prepares a wedding feast for his son.
The invitations go out.
But the invited guests refuse.
Some ignore it.
Some mistreat the messengers.
Some reject it outright.
So the king opens the doors to everyone — good and bad alike.
Yet one man enters without a wedding garment… and is cast out.
Jesus is sending a clear message:
The invitation to God’s Kingdom is open.
But entry requires true readiness.
You can’t show up on your terms.
Then the traps begin.
The Pharisees try to corner Him:
“Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar?”
Jesus responds:
“Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” — Matthew 22:21 (KJV)
Civic responsibility.
Spiritual allegiance.
And a reminder: You bear God’s image — give Him yourself.
The Sadducees challenge Him about the resurrection.
Jesus corrects them:
“Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” — Matthew 22:29 (KJV)
He affirms the resurrection and reveals that God is not the God of the dead — but of the living.
Finally, the question of all questions:
Which is the greatest commandment?
Jesus answers:
“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
“Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” — Matthew 22:37–39 (KJV)
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Matthew 22 teaches us:
You are invited.
You are accountable.
You will be tested.
And it all comes down to love.
But not shallow love.
Total devotion.
Whole-hearted surrender.
Active love toward others.
The question is:
Have you accepted the invitation — and are you clothed in readiness?
