Matthew 5 launches Jesus’ most famous teaching—the Sermon on the Mount—and it completely overturns the world’s value system. In this chapter, Jesus declares the Beatitudes, blessing the poor in spirit, the meek, the mourners, and those who hunger for righteousness. These aren’t signs of weakness—they are marks of kingdom strength.
Jesus calls His followers the salt of the earth and the light of the world, commanding believers not to hide their faith but to let it shine boldly for God’s glory. He makes it clear: He did not come to destroy the Law, but to fulfill it, raising the standard from outward obedience to inward transformation.
Anger becomes a heart-level form of murder. Lust becomes adultery of the soul. Revenge is replaced with reconciliation. Hate is confronted with radical love—even love for enemies.
Matthew 5 ends with a sobering challenge: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” This chapter is not about religious performance—it’s about a transformed heart that reflects the character of God.
