Matthew 6 sits at the very heart of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, revealing what authentic spiritual life truly looks like. In this chapter, Jesus confronts religious hypocrisy and calls believers to seek God’s approval—not human applause.

Jesus addresses three core spiritual practices: giving, prayer, and fasting. Rather than public performance, He teaches that true righteousness is practiced in secret, where God alone sees and rewards. At the center of this teaching is the Lord’s Prayer, a model of humility, forgiveness, daily dependence, and reverence for God’s will.

The chapter then turns to priorities. Jesus warns against storing up treasures on earth and reminds us that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also. Earthly wealth fades—but heavenly treasure lasts forever.

Matthew 6 closes with one of the most comforting teachings in all of Scripture: do not worry. Jesus assures us that the same God who feeds the birds and clothes the lilies cares deeply for His people. The solution to anxiety is clear: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.” (KJV)

This chapter challenges believers to live sincerely, trust fully, and center every part of life on God.
