Naaman, a commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a valiant soldier, but he suffered from leprosy. Desperate for a cure, Naaman heard about the prophet Elisha in Israel who could perform miracles. Guided by his wife’s servant girl, a young Israelite, Naaman sought out Elisha, hoping for healing. Upon arriving at Elisha’s house, Naaman was met by a messenger who relayed Elisha’s instructions: “Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored, and you will be cleansed.” Naaman initially reacted with anger and disbelief, expecting a grander gesture. He had envisioned Elisha calling upon the name of the Lord and waving his hand over the afflicted area. However, his servants persuaded him to follow the prophet’s simple yet profound command. Reluctantly, Naaman went down to the Jordan River and dipped himself seven times as instructed. Miraculously, his skin was restored, becoming as clean as that of a young boy. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Naaman returned to Elisha, proclaiming that there was no God in all the world except in Israel. This remarkable story highlights the power of faith, humility, and obedience, showcasing how divine intervention can transform lives.
Scripture:
II Kings 5:10-14 (KJV)
And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.
But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.
Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.
And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?
Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
