The first plague that struck Egypt was a dramatic and devastating event that set the tone for the subsequent plagues. Following God's instructions, Moses and Aaron confronted Pharaoh by the Nile River. With Aaron's staff, they struck the waters of the Nile, turning the water into blood. This miraculous transformation caused the fish to die and the river to stink, rendering the primary water source unusable. The Egyptians, who relied heavily on the Nile for drinking water, irrigation, and fishing, faced immediate and severe consequences. Despite the Egyptian magicians replicating this feat to some extent, they couldn't reverse the calamity. Pharaoh's heart remained hardened, refusing to release the Israelites from bondage. This first plague was not just a display of divine power but also a direct challenge to the Egyptian gods, particularly Hapi, the Nile god. This event marked the beginning of a series of judgments aimed at compelling Pharaoh to acknowledge the sovereignty of the God of Israel and let His people go.
