The New Testament opens with a declaration, not a debate:

“The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” (Matthew 1:1, KJV)

Matthew 1 traces the royal and prophetic lineage of Jesus Christ, establishing Him as the rightful heir to God’s promises given to Abraham and David. This genealogy is more than a list of names—it is a testimony of God’s faithfulness across generations.

Strikingly, the genealogy includes women like Rahab and Ruth, revealing that God’s redemptive plan reaches beyond boundaries of race, past, and reputation. Grace runs through the family line of the King.

The chapter then turns to the miraculous birth of Jesus. Mary is found with child by the Holy Ghost, and Joseph—described as a just man—plans to quietly end the engagement. But God intervenes. An angel appears in a dream, revealing that the child is divinely conceived and destined to save His people from their sins.

“And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (Matthew 1:23, KJV)

Joseph obeys without hesitation, names the child Jesus, and becomes part of God’s unfolding plan.

Matthew 1 reminds us that:

God’s promises never fail

God works through unexpected people

Obedience matters, even when understanding is incomplete

Jesus is both Savior and King
