Psalm 22 is a profound psalm of lament and prophecy, attributed to David. It vividly captures the suffering of an individual feeling abandoned by God, yet it also foreshadows the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

David begins with a heart-wrenching cry of abandonment: "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (Psalm 22:1). These words resonate deeply, as they were also spoken by Jesus on the cross. This shows the depth of human suffering and the feeling of divine distance during times of distress. It’s important to bring our deepest pains and questions to God. He can handle our honesty and meets us in our suffering.

David describes the mockery and scorn he faces: "All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him." (Psalm 22:7-8). This mirrors the taunts Jesus faced at the crucifixion, emphasizing the fulfillment of prophecy. Even in the face of ridicule, maintaining faith in God's deliverance is crucial.

Despite the anguish, David expresses confidence in God’s deliverance: "But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me." (Psalm 22:19). David’s shift from despair to trust reflects the journey from suffering to triumph, pointing to Jesus’ resurrection, where victory followed suffering. Trust that God will turn our sorrows into joy and our suffering into victory. His deliverance is sure.

Psalm 22 is a powerful reminder of the suffering Messiah and the hope of divine deliverance. It calls us to bring our pain to God, endure with faith, and hope in His salvation.
