Mark Chapter 9 reveals the glory, power, and demands of following Jesus.
The chapter opens with a powerful promise—some would witness the kingdom of God coming with power. Just days later, Peter, James, and John experience it firsthand at the Transfiguration. Jesus is revealed in radiant glory, standing with Moses and Elijah, and a voice from heaven declares:
“This is my beloved Son: hear him.” (Mark 9:7 KJV)
Coming down the mountain, reality hits—a desperate father brings his demon-possessed son. The disciples couldn’t cast it out, but Jesus steps in with authority and delivers the boy, teaching a vital truth:
“This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” (Mark 9:29 KJV)
Jesus again foretells His death, yet the disciples don’t understand. Instead, they argue about who is the greatest. Jesus flips their thinking:
“If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.” (Mark 9:35 KJV)
He then gives serious warnings about sin, urging radical action to avoid anything that causes us—or others—to stumble.
Mark 9 ends with a call to live as salt—pure, effective, and at peace with one another.
🔥 This chapter challenges us:
Will we seek glory… or humility? Power… or prayer? Position… or service?
