Psalm 16 is a beautiful expression of trust and confidence in God's protection and provision. David begins with a heartfelt plea: "Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust." (Psalm 16:1). This opening sets the tone for the entire psalm, emphasizing a deep reliance on God.

David continues by acknowledging God as his source of goodness: "O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;" (Psalm 16:2). He recognizes that all good things come from the Lord, and apart from Him, he has no good thing.

David also highlights the importance of community among believers: "But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight." (Psalm 16:3). He finds joy and strength in the fellowship of other believers, celebrating their shared faith and commitment to God.

In contrast, he warns against idolatry: "Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips." David expresses his contentment and security in God's provision: "The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot." (Psalm 16:5). He is satisfied with what God has given him, knowing that God is his ultimate inheritance.

In verses 7 and 8, David speaks of his guidance and stability in the Lord: "I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved." David finds direction in God's counsel and is unwavering in his faith because he knows God is always with him.

The psalm concludes with a declaration of eternal hope and joy: "Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore." (Psalm 16:11). David rejoices in the promise of eternal life and the everlasting joy found in God's presence.
