Understanding the Jezebel Spirit in the Bible
The term "Jezebel spirit" is commonly used in Christian circles to describe a specific kind of manipulative, controlling, and rebellious behavior. While the Bible doesn't explicitly use the term "Jezebel spirit," the characteristics and actions of Queen Jezebel in the Old Testament, as well as the references to Jezebel in the New Testament, give us insight into what this spirit entails.
Old Testament:
Queen Jezebel:
Manipulation and Control:
Jezebel was the wife of King Ahab of Israel, and she is infamously known for her manipulative and controlling behavior. She influenced Ahab to worship Baal and led Israel into idolatry and sin.
1 Kings 21:25 (KJV) says, "But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the Lord, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up."
Persecution of God's Prophets:
Jezebel persecuted and killed the prophets of God. She used her position and influence to silence the voices of truth and righteousness.
1 Kings 18:4 (KJV) states, "For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water."
New Testament:
Revelation's Reference to Jezebel:
False Teaching and Immorality:
In Revelation 2:20, Jesus rebukes the church in Thyatira for tolerating a woman named Jezebel who calls herself a prophetess and leads people into sexual immorality and idolatry.
Revelation 2:20 (KJV) says, "Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols."
Warning and Judgment:
Jesus warns of severe consequences for Jezebel and her followers unless they repent of their ways.
Revelation 2:22-23 (KJV) states, “Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.”
Characteristics of the Jezebel Spirit:
Manipulation and Control:
The Jezebel spirit is often associated with a desire to manipulate and control others, often using deceit and cunning.
Rebellion and Defiance:
This spirit exhibits a rebellious attitude towards authority, especially God's authority, and seeks to undermine it.
Idolatry and Immorality:
Leading others into idolatry and immoral practices is a hallmark of the Jezebel spirit.
False Prophecy and Teaching:
Claiming spiritual authority and leading others astray with false teachings is another characteristic.
Dealing with the Jezebel Spirit:
Spiritual Discernment:
Believers need to be spiritually discerning and recognize the characteristics of this spirit in order to resist its influence.
1 John 4:1 (KJV) advises, "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."
Prayer and Authority:
Praying for spiritual protection and exercising the authority given by Jesus to overcome demonic influences is crucial.
Luke 10:19 (KJV) states, "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."
Repentance and Submission to God:
Repenting from any involvement or influence of the Jezebel spirit and submitting fully to God is essential for deliverance and spiritual health.
James 4:7 (KJV) instructs, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
In summary, the Jezebel spirit, as understood from biblical examples, represents manipulation, control, rebellion, idolatry, and false teaching. Recognizing and resisting this spirit involves spiritual discernment, prayer, exercising spiritual authority, and living in submission to God's will.
