Good day, everyone. Today, let's delve into Acts 15, a pivotal chapter in the early church that deals with the first major doctrinal controversy and highlights the importance of unity and discernment in the body of Christ.
Acts 15 begins with a significant dispute. Certain men from Judea came to Antioch teaching that Gentile believers must be circumcised according to the custom of Moses to be saved (Acts 15:1). This caused a sharp disagreement with Paul and Barnabas, leading to a significant council in Jerusalem to address this issue.
At the Jerusalem Council, the apostles and elders gathered to consider this matter. Peter stands up and recounts how God had chosen him to bring the gospel to the Gentiles, who received the Holy Spirit just as the Jewish believers did (Acts 15:7-9). Peter emphasizes that God makes no distinction between Jew and Gentile, purifying their hearts by faith.
James, the brother of Jesus and a leader in the Jerusalem church, then speaks. He references the prophets, particularly Amos, to show that the inclusion of Gentiles was always part of God's plan (Acts 15:1518). James proposes a solution: that Gentile believers should not be burdened with the full yoke of the Mosaic Law but should abstain from practices particularly offensive to Jewish Christians, like idolatry, sexual immorality, and consuming blood (Acts 15:1920).
This decision is crucial as it affirms that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by adherence to the Law of Moses. It also shows the early church's effort to maintain unity and fellowship among diverse believers.
The council sends a letter with this decision to Antioch, delivered by Paul, Barnabas, Judas, and Silas. The believers in Antioch rejoice at the encouraging message, and Judas and Silas strengthen the church with further teaching (Acts 15:30-32).
Acts 15 concludes with Paul and Barnabas preparing for another missionary journey. However, a sharp disagreement arises between them over John Mark, leading them to part ways and undertake separate missions (Acts 15:36-40). Despite their disagreement, both continue to serve the Lord effectively, showing that even in conflict, God can work through His people for His purposes.
