Zechariah 11 delivers one of the most sobering and prophetic chapters in the Old Testament. It opens with a lament over the destruction of Lebanon and Bashan, symbolizing judgment upon the land and its leaders. God commands Zechariah to act as a shepherd over a flock destined for slaughter, revealing the tragic consequences of corrupt leadership and spiritual blindness.

Using two staffs—Favor and Union—Zechariah portrays God’s grace and the unity of His people. When the flock rejects the shepherd, both staffs are broken, symbolizing the withdrawal of divine favor and the collapse of national unity. The chapter reaches a stunning prophetic moment when Zechariah is paid thirty pieces of silver, the price of a slave—foreshadowing the betrayal of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.

The chapter ends with a warning about a worthless shepherd who abandons the flock, highlighting the danger of rejecting true, God-appointed leadership.

Zechariah 11 calls us to value faithful shepherds, recognize the cost of betrayal, and heed the consequences of rejecting God’s care.
